LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's water polo star Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added to her impressive list of awards Wednesday when she was named the inaugural Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A three-time all-conference pick and an Honorable Mention All-American, Rowe completed the 2009 campaign as Bucknell's all-time leading scorer.
The highest honor bestowed by the CWPA to an active player, the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding senior student-athlete who has achieved success in both the scholastic and athletic arenas while possessing a spirit which provides service to the community. The recipient was selected based on a points system derived from community service, CWPA academic honors, scholastic achievement and all-conference/All-Eastern Tournament selections over her career.
Rowe, who graduated in May with a 3.65 cumulative grade-point average while double majoring in English/creative writing and Spanish, capped an outstanding four-year career in 2009 by breaking Bucknell single-season records for goals (75) and points (128). She also ended her career with the Bison standards for points (358) and steals (251) and is in the top three in program history in four other categories.
Rowe earned Second Team All-Southern Division honors each of the last two years and was a first-team selection as a freshman in 2006 when she also copped Rookie of the Year honors.
This past season, Rowe, who served as team captain, was a three-time CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week and became the third different player in program history to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors. She registered 23 multiple-point games to end the campaign and was named Second Team All-Eastern Championship. Her 53 assists rank fourth all-time at Bucknell, while her 82 steals rank second to only her junior-year total of 84.
An Academic All-District II selection this past spring, Rowe earned Dean's List honors all eight semesters and was a four-time selection to the CWPA and ACWPC All-Academic Teams.
Rowe capped her career by earning the Lee S. "Bud" Ranck Award at Bucknell's annual Senior Recognition Dinner. The award is presented to senior athletes "for outstanding spirit and contributions to the Bucknell athletic program."
Rowe helped the Bison to a solid 82-53 mark over the last four years. Included in that span were a pair of 20-win seasons and the best record (26-10) in the 11-year history of the successful program.
Away from the pool, Rowe equaled her academic and athletic success when assisting with the Cumberland Valley High School and Middle School water polo teams from 2005 through present and serving as a team captain in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in 2008 and 2009. In addition, she completed community service with her Bucknell teammates, including assisting at senior centers and University calling services.
