LEWISBURG, Pa. - Rising seniors Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and Sarah Ebright (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) were named 2009 Bucknell field hockey team co-captains, head coach Jeremy Cook announced today. The duo seeks to lead the Bison to back-to-back Patriot League Championships for the first time in program history.
A two-year starter in goal for the Bison, Atieh has accumulated a 14-10 career record. In her junior season, the goaltender ranked fourth in the Patriot League action in saves per game (3.20) and fifth in saves (65), save percentage (.640) and goals against average (2.42). Off the field, Atieh has been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Academic Squad and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each of her previous three seasons while majoring in elementary education
Ebright has been a mainstay in the Bucknell lineup throughout her career. The defender has played in all 53 games during her first three seasons, starting 52 of those contests. She has also registered five career defensive saves and registered her first career point last season by posting an assist in her team's 2-1 victory over Lehigh. A civil engineering major, Ebright added ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team to her list of academic achievements last year. Like Atieh, Ebright is also a three-time selection to the NFHCA All-Academic Squad and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
"We're very excited about this year's leadership," said the second-year head coach. "Both players know how to talk the talk and walk the walk. The entire team has been taking strides and working together to build on last year's success."
Bucknell field hockey posted one of its most successful seasons in 2008, tallying an 11-8 record overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League. As the No. 3 seed in the patriot League Tournament, the squad advanced to the championship game for the first time since 2000. The newest season of Bison field hockey kicks off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 29 at Albany. The Orange & Blue will play their first home game of the 2009 season at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4 when they take on Vermont at Graham Field.
