Former Bucknell Baseball Player Mark Angelo Selected in Major League Baseball Draft

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mark Angelo, a 2008 graduate of Bucknell and a three-year member of the Bison baseball team, was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the second pick of the 44th round (pick 1,313) of the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Thursday.
Angelo, who was not with the Bison squad as a freshman, used his final year of eligibility while enrolled in graduate school at East Stroudsburg this past year. The Quakertown, Pa., native was Bucknell's starting first baseman in 2007 and 2008 and finished his Bison career with a .311 average, two home runs and 56 runs batted in. He was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection as a senior when he was a team co-captain and also earned Academic All-District II honors.
Angelo, who helped the Bison to a Patriot League title and an NCAA Tournament win over Florida State in 2008, holds Bucknell single-season records for games played (56), games started (55) and at bats (209). He ranks fourth on the single-season hits list with 66 last year and stands third on the hit by pitch (15) list.
In his only season with East Stroudsburg, Angelo hit .421 with 12 home runs, 21 doubles, 58 runs batted in and 57 runs scored. Last week, he became the second All-America selection in ESU history when he was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association third team.
Angelo, whose uncle, Jimmy Angelo, played in the minor leagues in the Cincinnati Reds' organization, is the second-ever East Stroudsburg player to be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.
With Angelo's drafting, three members of the 2006 Bucknell team have now been chosen in the MLB Draft. Kyle Walter was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round of the 2006 draft, while Jason Buursma was chosen in the 25th round last year by the St. Louis Cardinals.
