Kawczenski Receives Senior Athletic Award at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area), co-captain of the men's swimming and diving team and a 2009 All-Patriot League First Team member, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, April 28.
Kawczenski won the Christy Mathewson Award, presented to “the outstanding senior athlete.” Kawczenski shared the award with Page Kannor of the women's rowing team, who was the female selection.
Capping a strong Bucknell career with his third Patriot League First Team selection this March and the fourth All-League selection of his tenure at Bucknell, Kawczenski holds school records in the 100 back, where he's the only Bucknell athlete to record a sub-50 second clocking (49.15), and is a member of four of the five record setting relay teams. Kawczenski resides in Bucknell's record book 14 different times.
Now with three conference titles under his belt, Kawczenski, a co-captain, logged another strong Patriot League Championship run, where and the Bison finished second to Navy. Kawczenski and the Bison completed a strong regular season, where they totaled an overall record of 7-2 and a first-place finish at their home Bucknell Invitational meet.
The Wilkes-Barre, Pa., native is a civil engineering major and a three-time member of the Patriot League Acadamic Honor Roll.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,583 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 14 of 18 years, including 10 of the last 11.
Recently, 17 Bison programs – the fifth-most in Division I – earned NCAA Public Recognition for having Academic Performance Rates in the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sport. In addition, Bucknell ranks fifth in Division I in the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 117 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
