LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell football's Kevin Mullen (Export, Pa./Penn-Trafford) was named to the 2009 National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society on Thursday. Mullen was one of 564 players nationwide recognized for their athletic and academic achievements throughout their career.
Originally a linebacker, Mullen moved to fullback his freshman year and eventually registered 732 career rushing yards and seven touchdowns. The graduating senior saw action in 42 career games, earning starts in each of the Bison's 11 contests his senior season. Known for his hard-nosed play and tireless work ethic, Mullen served as the squad's game-day captain seven times last season, the most of any player.
A double major in international relations and religion, Mullen was also active in the ROTC during his time in the Orange and Blue. He was awarded the Bucknell Football Leadership Award at the conclusion of each of his four seasons at Bucknell and was the first freshman to claim the honor. Mullen is also a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and was an Academic All-District II selection this past fall.
Mullen is the fourth Bucknell student-athlete to be named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, following Nick Mozal and Ryan Walsh in 2008. Former Bison David Frisbey was inducted in the honor society's inaugural class in 2007.
To be eligible for the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, student-athletes must be a starter or significant substitute in his last year of eligibility at an accredited NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university; achieve a cumulative 3.2 grade point average and meet all NCAA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.
Bucknell finished the 2008 season 5-6. A new round of competition starts with the squad's Spring Scrimmage at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
