LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bison Outdoor Classic Track Meet concluded Saturday and the Bucknell track and field programs registered a number of top performances while also gaining notoriety for successfully hosting their biggest home meet of the season. The non-scoring meet provided top-tier competition at the Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium.
"It was an outstanding meet for both our men's and women's programs," Bucknell head track and field coach Kevin Donner said. "There were numerous season-bests, as well as IC4A- and ECAC-qualifying marks."
Freshman Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) might have produced the most exciting result for the Bison with his victory in the 400-meter hurdles over Lehigh senior Scott Robinson. Arent passed Robinson in the final straightaway and was awarded first in 53.53 seconds to Robinson's 53.58. For Arent, his victory produced a personal-best time, an IC4A-qualifying mark and ranked fourth in Bucknell's all-time ranks.
"I was ecstatic," said Arent following his record-breaking performance.
Junior Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) also produced a hurdle win, clocking 14.41 seconds in the 110 hurdles. Sophomore Marlon Woods (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) placed sixth overall in he 100 with a personal-best time and sub-11 clocking in the 100 (10.94).
In field events, sophomore Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) placed second in the pole vault with a personal-best vault of 15 feet, 9 inches to place fourth on Bucknell's all-time performance list and also qualify for the IC4A meet. Fitzgerald also placed in the high jump, reaching 6-6 1/4. Junior Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) led the Bison with a personal-best mark of 48-11 ¼ inches in the triple jump, which reset his position as the second-best triple jumper in Bucknell history. He placed fourth in the event on Saturday. Anthony also took third in the long jump, leaping 23-4.
Sophomore Nicholas Hruch (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) tied for first with Susquehanna's Graham Huber as both cleared 6-7 ½. Huber won in a jump off against Hruch. Freshman Andrew Powell completed the decathlon, garnering 6,016 total points, to place third overall.
The Bison women had a strong day in the sprinting events with freshman Christina Muccio (Andover, Mass./Andover) placing seventh overall in 12.40 to put herself eighth on Bucknell's all-time performance list. In the 200, junior Stephanie Evans (York, Pa./Central York) bettered her personal-best time with a time of 25.38 to improve her eight-spot position on Bucknell's all-time ranks.
In the hurdles, Jamie Leacock (Howell, N.J./Howell) scored placed well twice. The sophomore registered a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.66 and a sixth-place finish in the 100 hurdles (14.91).
Sophomore Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) placed third in the 129-3 in the javelin throw as the top Bison field event athlete.
The Bison Outdoor Classic consisted of 74 teams and clubs. The meet continues to grow as a national-caliber event.
"The performances at this meet were very high and it will attract teams more teams to this competitive event," said Donner.
The Bison will be hosting their second consecutive home meet next weekend at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium. The Bucknell Team Challenge will be a one-day affair, taking place on Saturday.
