HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate scored three times late in the first half to break open a tie game and never looked back, defeating Bucknell 12-7 in a battle of Patriot League women's lacrosse unbeatens Saturday at Tyler's Field. Both teams came in with perfect 4-0 conference records, but it was the defending champion Raiders securing home field advantage for the Patriot League Tournament with the victory.
Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) scored three goals and Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) tallied twice each to account for all seven Bucknell goals. Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) had a strong game with 14 saves, eight of them coming in the first half when the Bison were outshot 19-6.
Bucknell is now 9-5 overall and has dropped back-to-back games for the first time all year. Colgate won its fifth game in a row to improve to 12-3.
The contest was tight throughout most of the first half. The game was tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before the Raiders gained some breathing room in the final six minutes. Brie Moran and Courtney Miller scored goals just 10 seconds apart to turn a 4-all tie into a 6-4 lead with 5:46 remaining in the half. Then with just 32 seconds left it was Colleen Bubnack scoring to make it 7-4 at the half.
Buechel's third goal of the day and 32nd of the season 3:51 into the second period pulled the Bison within 7-5, but Miller scored twice and Moran once in a 3-0 Colgate run, pushing the spread to 10-5 with 15:41 to play. Bucknell cut it to four twice more, but the Raiders answered each time.
Colgate finished with a 32-15 shot advantage and led 17-12 in ground balls. Bucknell had 22 turnovers to 21 for Colgate. Freshman Jenna Lotkowictz (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) led the Bison with three grounds balls and three caused turnovers.
Didio and Miller led the Colgate offense with three goals each, while Meghan Lawler had three assists.
Donohue also had an assist in the game, giving her three points. That gave her 150 career points, making her just the fifth player in program history to reach that milestone.
Bucknell has locked up a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, and the Bison have two more home games before then. They host Marist in a non-league game Tuesday at 4 p.m., then they entertain Navy in the Patriot League finale next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Graham Field.
