LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) scored three goals apiece but the Bucknell women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome an early deficit and was defeated by Marist, 14-9, at a damp Graham Field Tuesday evening. It was the third straight loss for the Bison, who fell to 9-6 on the year.
Marist (8-4) took an early lead and never looked back as four consecutive goals by Cristin Begley in the middle of the first half overcame their only deficit. Trailing 2-1, Begley scored all four goals in a two minute span to put the Red Foxes up by three. A Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) goal halfway through the first half would cut the deficit to two, the lowest it would reach for the remainder of the game. Marist would then go on to score three consecutive goals to account for seven of the eight goals scored in a seven-minute span.
Buechel's three goals put her at a team-high 35 goals for the season, one shy of her career high 36, which she set in 2007. All three of her goals came in the second half. She was the only Bison to score in the second half until Donohue's final goal with 4:21 left in the game.
Donohue is the second Bison to hit the 30-goal mark this season, with her three goals Tuesday putting her at an even 30. She also led Bucknell in shots, tallying seven, with six on goal.
While Begley's four-goal streak early in the first half put Marist ahead, a yellow card to Donohue with 20:07 left in the second half opened up another scoring streak for the Red Foxes, as both Lauren Ciccarello and Kelly Condon scored during her penalty.
Begley led Marist with four goals, while four other Red Foxes tallied two goals apiece.
Marist goalie Kelsey Thoms made nine of her 10 saves in the first half, while Bison goalies Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) and Jenna Wadsworth (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) combined for a total of six saves.
Bucknell will return to action this Saturday, April 18, as it hosts a Patriot League showdown against Navy at Graham Field. The game is scheduled to begin a 1 p.m. Prior to the contest, Bison seniors Buechel and Catherine Barry will be recognized during Senior Day ceremonies.
