LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior midfielder Doug Buckley (Wantagh, N.Y./Chaminade) has been selected as one of 30 national candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's lacrosse. Buckley is not only a key contributor on the lacrosse field, but he has a 3.69 grade-point average in business management and has been active in the community as well.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: Classroom, Character, Community, and Competition. An acronym for “Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School,” the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages those leaders to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact on their circle of influence.
The list of 30 student-athletes will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot. The ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the “Four C's” of Classroom, Character, Community, and Competition. The award winner will be announced and presented with his trophy at the 2009 Final Four in Foxboro, Mass.
Buckley has made the Dean's List (3.5+) in every semester at Bucknell. He is a member of Delta Mu Delta honor society for academic achievement in business administration and is a three-time member of Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Buckley completed a summer 2008 internship with an investment bank, where he was tasked with contacting potential clients in New Zealand. Additionally, he is active with the Bucknell Investment Club, which involves weekly meetings to discuss finance, economics and investing.
He is the recipient of the Bradley James Fetchet Memorial Scholarship, given to a Bucknell student who reflects Brad's love of life, athletics and compassion for those in need. Brad Fetchet was a Bucknell lacrosse player who lost his life on Sept. 11 in the World Trade Center.
Along with some lacrosse teammates, Buckley has been active with Americans Supporting Americans, where the student-athletes send care packages and notes of encouragement to various military units overseas. He also serves as a men's lacrosse representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and during the fall of 2005 and 2006 participated in the Homework Club, assisting local middle school children with their schoolwork. In the summers of 2006-08, Buckley coached the Long Island Sting (age 15-17 boys lacrosse) at numerous camps and tournaments.
Playing in every varsity game to date at Bucknell, Buckley has been a part of the first and second midfield units throughout his career. He scored a career-high 14 points last season on seven goals and seven assists and helped lead the Bison to the 2008 Patriot League championship game. He scored a shorthanded goal in that game against Colgate. Buckley has 14 goals and 11 assists in his career, including a goal in Bucknell's upset win over No. 1 Maryland in 2006.
Buckley and his teammates will be back on the field on Saturday at Hobart at 1 p.m. The Bison are 1-2 on the season and ranked No. 20 in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
