LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team continued its winning ways at home (3-0) with a solid 7-0 victory over Towson Thursday. Bucknell won for the first time on its home surface in Gerhard Fieldhouse. The Bison previously won two home competitions at West Branch Tennis Center against Quinnipiac and Hofstra.
Bucknell now carries a 6-3 record and has won 23 of its last 28 indicidual singles matches. The Tigers fell to 0-3 on the season.
Junior Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy), sophomore Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School For Girls), senior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School), freshman Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and senior Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) all picked up singles victories as well as wins in doubles competition.
Lucido teamed with Gamboa to defeat Caitlin White and Lauren Cloonan in the one spot of doubles competition as the pair improved to 9-2 this season. Lucido then blanked Cloonan in straight sets in the number two spot of singles competition, 6-0, 6-0, to complete a perfect day.
Iepuras had similar strong results, defeating Evelyn Izaquirre in the fourth singles spot (6-0, 6-0) after teaming up with junior Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) to take the third doubles match over junior Ashley Peretz and sophomore Katie Young, 8-2.
Sophomore Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) won in the sixth singles spot against Young, where she is yet to lose this season (5-0).
Next up for the Bison is a match against Florida Gulf Coast on March 10.
