LEWISBURG, Pa. - On the heels of its big Patriot League win over 12th-ranked Navy on Saturday, three members of the Bucknell men's lacrosse team earned Patriot League Player of the Week honors this week. Senior defender Billy Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) was named the Defensive Player of the Week, senior Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) earned Goalie of the Week honors, and freshman midfielder Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) was picked as the Rookie of the Week.
In the first Patriot League contest of the young season, the Bison knocked off Navy 8-7 on Streep's dramatic goal with no time left on the clock. That was one of two goals on the day for Streep, who earned his second straight rookie honor. On the winning goal, Streep took possession of the ball on a restart in the deep right corner with five seconds remaining. With Preseason First Team All-America short-stick defender Geoff Leone defending him, Streep took the ball to the goal and scored in traffic just a split second before the clock expired.
Streep, who had a hat trick against Ohio State in the previous game, now has five goals and an assist on the season and ranks third on the team in points.
Haire and Sciubba played significant roles in Bucknell's strong defensive effort. The Bison allowed only three goals in the first three quarters of the game and led 7-3 into the fourth quarter before Navy rallied to tie the game with 1:30 left.
Haire, a Preseason Honorable Mention All-American and the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, had three ground balls and forced two turnovers in the game.
Sciubba finished with 13 saves while allowing just seven goals. He nabbed six saves in the second quarter alone, allowing the Bison to pull ahead by three at the half. Sciubba had 10 saves and only three goals against in the first three quarters, then he made three more stops in the fourth quarter.
Bucknell is back in the national polls this week, ranked No. 20 in both the ESPN/Inside Lacrosse media poll and the USILA coaches' poll.
The Bison travel to Hobart on Saturday at 1 p.m.
