WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bucknell softball team continued to split its doubleheaders, taking an 11-3 win in six innings over Holy Cross but dropping the second game to the Crusaders 7-5 in Worcester, Mass., on Saturday. Alison Ford (Suison, Calif./Fairfield) and Kristin Frick (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) both drilled sixth inning home runs in the opening game as seven Bison crossed the plate at least once in the contest.
Bucknell (9-15, 1-1) came out with an early lead to start off the day. Mary Pavlovich (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) walked and advanced to third base with the help of a double from Lauren Fry (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield). Ford then earned the RBI to score Pavlovich and move Fry to third. Fry scored on a single down the left side from Cassie Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg), putting the Bison up 2-0 after one inning.
Frick doubled in the Bison's half of the second inning to kick off the offense again. She scored her first of three runs in the game off a double from Pavlovich.
The Crusaders (7-15, 1-1) threatened in the second as well, scoring two runs. Dettey Audette hit a leadoff homer, and Sam Lendhardt scored on back-to-back singles to center field. The brief scoring burst put Holy Cross within a single run at 3-2.
Bucknell put up two more runs in the third inning, this time from Ford and Ashley Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover). Ford singled to left field and eventually scored on a single to right from Lloyd, while Beans walked to get on base and scored on a sacrifice fly from Frick.
Holy Cross gave it one more shot in their half of the third inning, putting a third run on the board, but that was the last of the home team's offensive production. The Orange and Blue added two runs in the fifth, giving them the 7-3 advantage. Lloyd singled to center field and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jessie Snyder (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium). Frick also crossed the plate after reaching base on a fielder's choice and scoring as Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) singled to the shortstop.
While the Bison had been successful offensively throughout the game, they put up their biggest runs count in the sixth. Four players scored, including Ford who homered for Bucknell's eighth run on the day. Beans followed by drawing her third walk in the game and then scored on a single to left field from Elyse Colmenero (Fresno, Calif./Central). With Colmenero on first, Frick hit her first home run of the season, capping off the scoring at 11-3.
Frick finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI, while Ford chipped in two runs and a pair of RBI in a 2-for-3 performance as well. Beans also tallied two runs despite going 0-for-1 with three walks.
Katie McDonald (York, Pa./West York Area) recorded her second consecutive win to improve her pitching record to 6-2 on the year. The senior allowed just three runs on seven hits and struck out six. Katie Alexander took the loss for Holy Cross.
The second game of the doubleheader proved to be the Crusaders' turn to take an early lead. Gwen Reimer led off the game with a walk and Erin Fleming reached of a fielder's choice two batters later. With runners on first and second, Keeley Seniuk homered to put her team up 3-0. Audette tagged on a fourth run with her second home run of the day.
The shot signaled the end of the day for Bucknell's freshman pitcher, Liz Fanning (Ventura, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS), who gave up four runs on two hits in less than an inning.
Bucknell made up some ground in the top of the second inning, posting three runs to set the score at 4-3. Three consecutive Bison singled, loading the bases for Snyder who also singled, scoring pinch runner Sherry Finkel (Morgantown, W. Va./University). Pavlovich tallied a two-RBI single to close out the scoring in the inning.
Holy Cross erased the Bucknell threat in its half of the inning, however, recovering the three runs. The Bison's freshman pitching continued to struggle to find its stride as Kaytlin Senatore (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) allowed three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. She also gave up four walks, two of which ended in runs scored.
With McDonald back in the circle for the Bison, Holy Cross was held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Crusaders' pitching remained strong as well, however, as Bucknell managed just two more runs in the remaining five innings. Fry walked in the fifth before coming home on a Ford single. The sophomore outfielder then reached base on an error in the sixth inning, setting the stage for her to score Bucknell's final run of the game on an RBI double from Beans.
Frick continued with her strong offensive day, hitting 2-for-2 with a run and a stolen base in the second game. Pavlovich ended the day 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the team.
Audette (2-5) claimed the win for Holy Cross, giving up four earned runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. Fanning took the loss for Bucknell, falling to 0-6 on the season.
The Bison and the Crusaders continue the series with another doubleheader on Sunday. The first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
