LEWISBURG, Pa. - Fresh off a dramatic one-goal win over Binghamton on Wednesday, the Bison women's lacrosse team looks to stay hot when Patriot League rival Lafayette comes to Graham Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. The contest will air live on Bison Vision via BucknellBison.com, and it pits two teams at opposite ends of the Patriot League standings. Bucknell comes in with a 2-0 league mark (6-2 overall), while Lafayette is 0-2 in league play and 0-8 overall.
Bucknell has never been 3-0 in the league, and if it can manage a seventh win it would surpass last year's victory total with eight regular-season games still on the schedule. The Bison have won two straight games and four of their last five. On Wednesday they edged Binghamton 8-7 on Becca Devine's goal with five seconds left in the game. Lafayette took an 18-3 loss at Louisville on Wednesday.
Bucknell is tied with Colgate atop the Patriot League standings entering weekend play, with Navy a half game back at 1-0. The Mids travel to Holy Cross on Saturday, while the Raiders have a non-league game at Oregon.
Scouting Lafayette:
The Leopards' two Patriot League losses have come at home to Lehigh (14-7) and at Navy (19-4). Lafayette has been outscored 136-55 so far this season.
Lauren Brown leads the team in goals (11), assists (6) and points. Emily Archibald, Kristen Ruminski and Michaela Corn all have five goals apiece.
Emily Bjork and Alexa Biale have shared the goaltending duties thus far. They have combined for a .317 save percentage and 17.00 goals-against average.
Ruminski leads the team in ground balls (13) and draw controls (18).
Series Notes:
A series once owned by Lafayette has flipped around in the last five years. The Leopards won the first 25 games between the two teams before the Bison finally broke through with a 16-9 win in Easton in 2004. The Bison have won four of the five games since then and are now 4-26 all-time against Lafayette.
Bucknell has reached the 20-goal barrier in each of the last two meetings. The Bison won 21-11 at home in 2007 and 20-11 last season in Easton.
In last year's game, Carol Donohue logged four goals and four assists for eight points, and 11 different players scored goals in the 20-11 win. The game was tied at 8-8 early in the second half, but Bucknell broke it open with an 8-0 run. Julia Braun added three goals and Michelle Milot had two for the Bison. Braun also had six draw controls.
Bison Bits:
Sophomore goalie Alyssa DeLorenz earned her third Patriot League Goalie of the Week honor in the last four weeks on Monday. She made nine saves and allowed only four goals in the win over American on Saturday, then on Wednesday against Binghamton she tallied a career-high 17 saves while yielding only seven goals.
The Bison allowed single-digit goals only twice in 14 games last season, but this year they have already done it five times, including twice in a row.
Bucknell defeated Binghamton despite committing a season-high 25 turnovers and getting outshot 31-18. The Bison made up for it by winning 11 of 17 draws and converting 4 of 7 free-position shots compared to 1 of 9 by the Bearcats.
Carol Donohue continues to lead the team in scoring with 19 points on 14 goals and five assists. Bonnie Buechel is just behind at 16-2-18. Buechel had a goal and two assists against Binghamton, with all of the points coming on the team's first three goals of the day.
Becca Devine's winning goal with five seconds to play against Binghamton came on her only shot of the day. Devine had not scored in five games before notching the game-winner on a free-position attempt.
Julia Braun ranks second in the Patriot League in draw controls (22) and third in ground balls (25). Buechel is just behind in the GB category with 23, and she leads the team with 13 caused turnovers.
DeLorenz upped her season save percentage to .540 and lowered her goals-against average to 9.58 in the win over Binghamton.
Ashley St. John picked up a career-high six ground balls in the Binghamton game, upping her season total to 14.
Bucknell has allowed 19.0 goals per game in its two losses this season but only 7.0 in its six wins.
Bucknell has allowed 48 first-half goals this season but only 32 in the second half.
Next Up:
Bucknell takes a quick break from Patriot League play on Wednesday when it travels to Drexel for a 4 p.m. contest. The Bison are back home again next Saturday against conference foe Holy Cross at 3 p.m.
