LEWISBURG, Pa. – Alyssa Okita (Davis, Calif./Davis) was named the Patriot League Softball Player of the Week on Monday. The junior earned the honor after hitting .412 in seven contests at the Rebel Spring Games last week. The weekly award is the first of Okita's career.
Okita led the Orange and Blue in a number of statistical categories during the team's week in Florida. Her team-best .412 batting average (7-for-17) was helped largely by her two home runs in back-to-back games against Buffalo and Robert Morris. She also tallied eight RBI and tallied 14 total bases to lead the Bison.
The shortstop put together one of her finer outings against the Colonials of Robert Morris last Thursday. Okita hit 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI in the game that included her second home run of the season. She also continued her errorless streak in the field.
A native of California, Okita has started at shortstop in each of the 18 games in which she has appeared this season. She is hitting .340 (16-for-47) on the year with two home runs and three doubles. Okita also has tallied 12 RBI in 2009, matching her season-high set as a freshman two years ago.
While the Player of the Week accolade is the first of Okita's career, it is the second consecutive weekly award for Bucknell. Jane Messersmith (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week last week.
The Bison are back in action on Wednesday, March 25. They will take on Drexel in their home opener, a doubleheader slated for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch at the Varsity Softball Field.
