NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) tied the Bucknell record with seven goals in one game and she came one point shy of equaling the single-game record for points as she helped the Bison women's water polo team defeat Occidental 14-7 Wednesday evening, salvaging a split of its two games on the day. Earlier, Bucknell dropped a 9-6 decision to No. 11 Cal State Northridge, its ninth ranked opponent of the season.
Rozas, who now leads the team with 50 goals this season and ranks fourth on the career goals list with 167, tied Meg Blitzer's program record for goals in a game with her seven against Occidental. Her two assists helped her come within one point of joining Aubrey Rowe and Julie McLaughlin atop the single-game points ledger.
Against Occidental, the Bison outscored their opponent 6-0 in the third quarter to break open a game that was 6-3 at halftime. Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Kristin Vallis (Ridgefield, Conn./Phillips Exeter Academy) and Rowe each had two goals, while Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) rounded out the scoring with one goal and a pair of assists.
Bucknell (11-11) doubled up Occidental despite giving up 15 six-on-five chances while earning just five of its own.
Rachel McGillis (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) recorded nine saves in goal in the winning effort, while freshman Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) tallied four while playing the final quarter.
Just four hours before its game with Occidental, Bucknell faced No. 11 Cal State Northridge. The Bison played even in the first quarter as each team scored four goals, but Bucknell was outscored 3-0 in the second frame and tallied two goals the rest of the way.
Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) led the way for the Bison with three goals and one assist, while Skonezney added two goals. The freshman entered the day with just 17 goals this year and increased her total to 21 with a pair of multiple-goal outings.
Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) had six saves and equaled her career high with six steals. She went over the 100-save plateau for the year and is now just one save behind Kristen D'Agostino for third place on the Bucknell career list.
The Bison will continue their week-long trip to California against Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening. Bucknell will then play a pair of games Saturday at the Claremont Convergence before returning to Pennsylvania.
