Canonica's Nine Points, Big Fourth Quarter Help Bucknell Women's Water Polo to 13-9 Victory at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) equaled her career high with nine points and Bucknell outscored Pomona-Pitzer 5-1 in the fourth quarter to break an 8-8 tie and defeat Pomona-Pitzer 13-9 Friday evening in women's water polo action. The Sagehens are the No. 1 ranked team in Division III.
Canonica equaled her career high and became the second Bison player to register nine points in a game this week, joining Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho). Canonica, who came one point shy of equaling the program record for points, had five goals and four assists. She now has exactly 200 points in her two-year career.
Rozas and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) helped Canonica on the offensive end with three goals apiece. Both also dished out one assist as Bucknell had assists on each of its 13 goals. Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) led the way with five assists, giving her a new career high in that category.
Bucknell (12-11), which improved to 5-3 in California this season, totaled 15 steals in the game, with five players who had multiple-steal outings accounting for all 15. Haley Prickett (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar)) posted a team-high five, while Rowe and Palencia each recorded three. Rozas and Canonica had two apiece.
Also on the defensive side of the ball, goalies Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Rachel McGillis (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) combined to stop seven shots. Carter's five saves in the first half vaulted her career total to 394, moving her into third place in Bucknell history.
With the loss, Pomona-Pitzer dropped to 8-5 this season.
The Bison will wrap up their Spring Break trip to California on Saturday with two games at the Claremont Convergence against Cal Lutheran and Chapman.
