LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell sophomores Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) and Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) continued their terrific starts to the 2009 season in a big Patriot League win over Lehigh on Saturday, and both have been selected for league player of the week honors for the second time already this year.
Braun was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row after piling up eight ground balls, eight draw controls and a big second-half goal in the 12-11 triple-overtime win over the Mountain Hawks. The eight ground balls tied the program record, while the eight draw controls were second-most in a game by a Bison player.
Braun leads the Patriot League in ground balls with 24 in five games and ranks second in the league in draw controls with 16. She also has six goals and an assist on the season and ranks fourth on the team in total points.
DeLorenz made 13 saves in the winning effort, none bigger than the stop on reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year Lauren Dykstra on a free-position shot with 12 seconds left in the second overtime period.
DeLorenz now ranks second in the Patriot League in save percentage (.536) and saves per game (10.4), and she is third in the league in goals-against average (9.13).
With Braun excelling at both ends of the field from her midfield position and DeLorenz playing well in goal, the Bison are giving up about four fewer goals per game this season compared to last. They are now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League and off to their best start since 1997.
The Bison will be back in action on Wednesday at Duquesne at 4 p.m.
