PRINCETON, N.J. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) scored four goals apiece and the Bucknell defense recorded a season-high 16 steals as the Bison women's water polo team defeated Villanova 17-3 on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool. It was the second win of the season for Bucknell, which will face Mercyhurst Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
Rowe compiled a team-high seven points in the win, while Hallie Kennan (3g, 3a) (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Canonica registered six points apiece. Amanda Skonezney (Mechancisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added a team-high four assists as the Bison assisted on 15 of their 17 goals.
Bucknell (2-3) outscored the Wildcats (0-1) 8-1 in the first half. Villanova managed just one goal in the first three quarters of play. The final 14-goal differential was two away from the Bison record. Bucknell won two games by 13 goals last year, including one against the Wildcats.
In addition to her offensive output, Rowe was strong on the defensive end with five steals, tying her career high. She has now piled up four steals in a contest five times in her four-year career. Skonezney added three steals and she won all three sprints contested.
Kennan and Skonezney, two members of a large Bison freshman class, combined for three goals, seven assists and five steals.
With her four goals, Rozas moved into the top 10 in Bucknell history in points (174). She is now five points behind Julie McLaughlin for ninth place in program annals.
Rachel McGillis (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) started in goal and made six saves and dished out one assist while yielding just one goal. Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) played the second half and stopped four shots and allowed a pair of fourth-quarter scores.
Bucknell easily won the contest despite playing without starters Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover), Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Haley Prickett (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar).
The Bison will wrap up their day of play Saturday at 5 p.m. against Mercyhurst. Bucknell faced the Lakers for the first time in program history last April and won 14-8 at the Eastern Championship.
