COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) equaled her career high with four goals and Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) recorded a career high-tying 14 saves in goal, but the Bucknell women's water polo team lost its league opener to Maryland, 13-9, Sunday afternoon at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
The game started an hour later than originally scheduled due to some travel issues, but it did not seem to bother the Bison early as they were down just 8-7 after three quarters. However, the Terps outscored Bucknell 5-2 in the fourth quarter.
Bucknell (3-4, 0-1 CWPA Southern Division) played the entire second half without senior captain Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who was whistled for three first-half ejections. She did not record a point in the contest, marking just the second time in the last 17 games she has not scored.
Canonica led the Bison offense as she netted four goals for the third time this season and the fourth time in her career. She also added an assist to give her a team-high five points on the day. Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) and Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added two goals apiece, while Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) dished out a team-best three assists. Rozas moved into seventh place on the program's career goals list with 135.
Carter was strong on the defensive end with 14 saves. It was the second time she has registered 14 stops in a contest, both against Maryland (2-3, 1-0 CWPA Southern Division).
Bucknell had its two-game winning streak against Maryland snapped. The Bison still own a 16-7 edge in the all-time series. The two teams are slated to meet again in Lewisburg on April 4, although the Terps will play in the Elite Six Invitational at Kinney Natatorium in two weeks.
The Terps are slated to play league rival Princeton at 6 p.m. Sunday evening. Bucknell will return to action next weekend, Feb. 21-22, at the Princeton Invitational. The Bison will take on Wagner, Brown, Marist and Harvard during the two-day event.
