Bucknell Women's Water Polo Posts 14-1 Victory Over Mercyhurst

PRINCETON, N.J. – Seven different Bison netted at least one goal and Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Kristin Vallis (Ridgefield, Conn./Phillips Exeter Academy) and Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) led the way with three apiece as the Bucknell women's water polo team defeated Mercyhurst 14-1 Saturday evening at DeNunzio Pool. It was the second lopsided win of the day for the Bison, who upended Villanova 17-3 earlier in the day.
Bucknell's balanced scoring attack helped it jump out to an 8-1 halftime lead. The Bison then outscored the Lakers 6-0 in the second stanza to improve to 3-3 this season.
Vallis' goal total was a new career high, eclipsing the two goals she had last year against Mercyhurst. It was also a career high for Skonezney, who had not netted a goal in the first five games of her career. In addition to the three goals, Skonezney won all four sprints as she was a perfect 7-for-7 in the two games Saturday.
Rozas tied senior captain Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) for the team lead with five points as she dished out two assists to go along with her three scores. Rowe posted one goal and four assists, giving her 92 helpers in her career, good for fourth on the Bison all-time list.
Rachel McGillis (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) upped her team-leading save total to 26 with six saves in the first half, while Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) held Mercyhurst scoreless in the second half and made one save.
Despite the five points apiece from Rozas and Rowe, freshmen and sophomores played a large role in the victory for Bucknell. Freshmen accounted for six goals and three assists, while the sophomore class totaled four goals and three assists.
The Bison will return to action next Sunday, Feb. 15, at Maryland. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. Bucknell is 16-6 all-time against the Terrapins.
