CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Three Virginia pitchers combined on a shutout of Bucknell and limited the Bison to just four hits as the Bucknell baseball team dropped its season opener to the Cavaliers, 12-0, Friday evening at a chilly and blustery Davenport Field. The contest was the first of a four-game series scheduled for this weekend.
B.J. LaRosa (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal), Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill), Andrew Loucks (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) and Bret Sokirka (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) each managed a single for the Bison, who committed four errors in the loss. Bucknell advanced just one runner as far as second base, and that came in the seventh inning when an infield single by Loucks advanced Shribman, who had reached on a fielder's choice following a walk by Zachary Brown (Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame).
Virginia (1-0), which collected six extra-base hits, scored at least one run in six of the first seven innings, including five in the third when it sent nine men to the plate. Four of the five runs were unearned even though the Cavaliers totaled five of their 15 hits in the frame.
Seven of Virginia's nine starters registered at least one hit, with Dan Grovatt and Steven Proscia leading the way with 3-for-5 showings. Both also hit home runs. Grovatt, Proscia, Jarrett Parker and Danny Hultzen each drove in two runs as well.
Sophomore Dylan Seeley (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) got the opening day start on the mound for the Bison. He yielded nine hits, eight runs, four earned runs and two walks in 3.0 innings of work. Jimmy Murphy (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and Michael Dallanegra (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) combined for five innings of relief. Each gave up three hits and a pair of runs, while Murphy struck out two in his three innings of work.
Senior Andrew Carraway (1-0) started for Virginia and allowed two hits and two walks before being lifted one out into the sixth inning. He did not allow Bucknell to send more than four hitters to the plate in any of the first five innings. Shane Halley pitched the ninth inning and struck out the side, each on called third strikes.
Bucknell (0-1) and Virginia will square off in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The two teams will then wrap up their four-game set Sunday afternoon.
