"And this applies to you freshmen too, because you'll blink and you'll be seniors and it will be your careers about to close."
We were wrapping up practice, listening to the final announcements and preparing ourselves for our final weekend at Colgate. I remember rolling my eyes at Coach (Angie) Stackhouse's mini-speech. I had three years before I had to think about being a senior, three more years to make a mark on the program. I had three whole years until I had to face the end of my softball career and the way my freshman year was crawling along at a snail's pace, three years was equivalent to an eternity.
Wrong.
I blinked and now I am a second semester junior with over half of my college experience at Bucknell complete, trying desperately to slam on the brakes to slow time's steady progression. But apparently my time at Bucknell is already being measured in two-clock time, and according to my one semester's worth of physics knowledge, time's already moving as slow as possible. Lame physics jokes aside, though it may be easy to measure how much time we have left as collegiate athletes, what we do with that time is much more important.
All of us are working hard, ready to come back from winter break, start the season, and keep improving, so that come the Patriot League Tournament in May, we are playing our best softball. I am confident that this team will meet the high expectations we have set for ourselves that includes not only making the Patriot League Tournament, but winning it for the first time since 1997.
Though going into my third season means I only have three semesters left at Bucknell, the advantage of knowing what to expect makes me excited for the upcoming season. We have several new faces on our team this year, each bringing their own unique talents and personalities that will make this year memorable. I have faith that this group of talented upperclassmen and eager first-year players will accomplish great things, so that by the time I blink again, I'll be one of Bucknell's alumni looking back at my time at Bucknell and recalling the sweet memories of winning the Patriot League.
