BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Bucknell softball team got off to a rocky start in 2009, falling 9-1 to Charleston Southern University in its first game of the Camel Stampede on Friday afternoon. Jessie Snyder (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) scored the Bison's (0-1) only run as the game was called after five innings.
Snyder singled to center field in the top of the third before Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) reached on a fielder's choice, advancing the sophomore to second. Mary Pavlovich (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) then singled to left center to bring Snyder home and earn the RBI and bring the score to 3-1 in favor of the Buccaneers.
Bucknell had threatened first in the game but was unable to capitalize on its early baserunners. Carlson led off with a walk, and Ashley Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) reached on a fielder's choice to start off the contest. Pavlovich chipped in a sacrifice bunt to move Beans to third, but nothing came of the first-inning effort.
Charleston Southern (2-0) had little trouble getting on the board quickly. Jamie Wellons tripled of Katie McDonald (York, Pa./West York Area) in the first, bringing home Megan Hall and Megan Lombard. Lombard would eventually score two more times, once in the second and again in the fifth, to lead the Buccaneers.
Sondra Vetter (2-0) finished the game for Charleston Southern having given up just three hits and one walk. McDonald gave up eight hits and nine runs, six of them earned, while walking seven on the afternoon.
Bucknell plays its second game of the tournament later today at 5:30 p.m. The Bison will take on the host Campbell Camels.
