BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Bison scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to bring the score to within a single run, but it was not enough as the Bucknell softball team (0-2) fell 4-3 to Campbell on Friday night. Alyssa Okita (Davis, Calif./Davis) finished the game 2-for-2 with one run to lead the Bison.
After getting down 4-1 in the fourth inning, Bucknell attempted a comeback two innings later. The Bison loaded the bases with a trio of singles from Alison Ford (Suison, Calif./Fairfield), Okita and Elyse Colmenero (Fresno, Calif./Central). Ford eventually scored on a wild pitch by Campbell's (2-3) Christina Melton to make the score 4-2.
Kristin Frick (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) next grounded out to second base, but earned the RBI, bringing in Okita to give Bucknell its third and final run of the day.
Bucknell's first run against the Camels came in the top of the fourth from Lauren Trosch (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) who entered the game as a pinch runner after Okita earned a walk. Colmenero drew a walk, advancing Trosch to third. The junior then stole third, putting herself in position to come home on a passed ball and keep the Bison within striking distance.
Campbell responded in the bottom half on the inning, however, scoring its third and fourth runs of the game. Taylor McGee and Melton each crossed the plate for the Camels in the fourth to give them just enough room to hold on for the win.
Melton (1-1) earned the win for Campbell after giving up one earned run on eight hits. Bucknell's Jane Messersmith (0-1) fell in her collegiate debut despite allowing just five hits and two walks. Bucknell continues with day two of the Camel Stampede with a pair of games on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The Bison start off with a 3 p.m. matchup with Ohio, followed by Saint Joseph's at 5:30 p.m. Live stats for both games can be found at gocamels.com.
