LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior LB Greg Jones (Springfield, Va./Lee) on Friday was named to the 12th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team. A total of 55 players from a pool of 86 nominees were cited. Jones was one of just three Patriot League players recognized.
A winner of four team postseason awards, including MVP, Jones became Bucknell's first linebacker to be named All-Patriot League since 2006 this fall when he landed on the first team. The three-year starter also piled up a career-high 101 tackles to rank second in the Patriot League and boost his career total to 257. He was the first Bison to hit the century mark in stops since Dorian Petersen in 2006.
A starter in all 11 games in 2009 and 30 in his four-year career, Jones was exceptionally strong over his final 17 games in Orange and Blue, piling up 170 tackles over that span. During that stretch he recorded 10 double-figure tackle outings, including six this past year.
Jones, a two-year team captain, was among the best on the Bison with five tackles for loss in 2009, while his career-high three interceptions tied him for fourth in the Patriot League. Among Jones' best interceptions was one he returned 25 yards for a touchdown against Robert Morris, helping Bucknell to its first win of the year.
In the classroom, Jones owns a 3.65 cumulative GPA and is majoring in history.
Jones is the first Bison to be named to the FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team since Michael Boccella and David Frisbey were among the 54 honorees in 2006.
Mike McCabe and Chris Smith, both of Holy Cross, were the other two Patriot League representatives on this year's squad.
Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision institutions were eligible for the Academic All-Star Team. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade-point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.
Jones and the Bison finished 4-7 in 2009, including 2-4 in Patriot League play. The Bison upset No. 13 Holy Cross in the season finale at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
