LEWISBURG, Pa. – Following successful seasons on the pitch, the Bucknell men's and women's soccer teams have now been recognized for their academic work as well. Both Bison soccer squads have earned 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Awards for maintaining team grade-point averages of 3.0 or better.
Bucknell was one of 97 schools from all divisions – and the only one in the Patriot League -- to have both its men's and women's teams recognized. Brendan Nash's men's team, which won the Patriot League championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, compiled a 3.28 combined GPA. The Bison women's squad, which won 10 games and qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the fifth straight year under coach Ben Landis, garnered a team GPA of 3.50.
Both Bison teams had GPAs ranked in the top 11 among all Division I programs.
The Bucknell men's and women's soccer programs have a long tradition of scholar-athlete success. In 2009 the men's team placed three student-athletes – Patrick Selwood, Sean King and Tommy Caso – on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, and Selwood went on to earn national Academic All-America honors. On the women's side, Lauren Stoller earned Academic All-District accolades for the third year in a row.
The men's team finished the 2009 season with a 17-6 record, setting school and Patriot League records for wins in a season. The Bison won the Patriot League title and defeated Princeton in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The women's team finished 10-8-1 after dropping a heartbreaker to American on a 90th-minute goal in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.
