LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman forward Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./The Pingry School) was named the Patriot League Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week on Monday after scoring a big goal against Lehigh in Friday night's regular-season finale at Emmitt Field.
The Bison trailed 1-0 until Burgdorf headed in a corner kick with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. That goal sent the game to overtime, where Lehigh scored in the second extra period to pull out a 2-1 win. Despite the loss, Bucknell still captured the Patriot League regular-season title and will host the Patriot League Tournament starting Friday evening.
Burgdorf now has seven goals on the season, tied for the most by a Patriot League freshman. Only teammate Conor O'Brien (10) has more goals in the league in 2009.
This is Burgdorf's first rookie of the week citation, although he did win Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors back on Oct. 19. He is the third Bucknell freshman in the last four weeks to claim rookie of the week accolades, following in the footsteps of CK Kumah and Josh Plump.
The Bison, now 14-5 on the season, will play fourth-seeded Lafayette in the first tournament semifinal match on Friday at 5 p.m. at Emmitt Field. No. 2 Lehigh and No. 3 American will follow at 8 p.m. Bucknell defeated Lafayette 1-0 at home on Oct. 30.
