LEWISBURG, Pa. - No. 20 Bucknell men's water polo led throughout much of the showdown with No. 17 Princeton, but a late comeback gave the Tigers a 10-9 overtime win in the Southern Championships at Kinney Natatorium Saturday evening. Richie Hyden finished with four goals, including one in the extra period, to lead the Bison.
Bucknell (15-12) struck first taking a 1-0 advantage midway through the first quarter off a goal by Andrew Nelson. Princeton tied the game twice to get to 2-2, but Bucknell then scored three unanswered goals. Hyden's first goal ended the half, putting the Bison up 3-2.
At 5-2 midway through the third frame, each of the Bison's goals had been tallied by a different player. Johnny Stupp, Howie Kalter and Sean Coghlan joined Nelson and Hyden in the scoring column.
A successful penalty shot for Princeton's Eric Vreeland brought the Tigers to within one at the end of the third, but the Bison eventually extended their lead back to two goals. Hyden's second score of the game at 4:06 in the fourth put Bucknell in front 8-6.
Unfortunately for the Bison faithful, Princeton netted two goals at the end of regulation, then outscored Bucknell 2-1 in overtime for the win. Bucknell will take on Johns Hopkins in the battle for third at 2 p.m. Princeton will advance to the championship game Sunday to play Navy at 3:30 p.m.
