LEWISBURG, Pa. - After not playing an overtime contest all season, the No. 20 Bucknell men's water polo team was forced to play extra time for the second straight contest Sunday afternoon against Johns Hopkins in the third-place game at Southern Championships. Unfortunately for the Bison, the outcome was the same as their one-goal overtime loss to Princeton on Saturday as they fell to the Blue Jays 9-8 Sunday.
Despite the loss, Bucknell (15-13), which earned its 10th consecutive top-four finish at the Southern Championships, has still earned a berth in the Eastern Championship, which will be contested in two weeks at MIT. The Bison will likely be the seventh seed in the eight-team field and take on CWPA Northern Division champion Brown in their first game.
In Sunday's championship game, top-seeded Navy defeated second-seeded Princeton 10-5 to win the Southern Championships for the 12th time.
Sunday's contest was a physical affair as the teams were whistled for a combined 23 ejections and five five-meter penalty shots were attempted. Four different Bison fouled out of the contest, while two Blue Jays did the same.
The game was close throughout as third-seeded Bucknell's 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter marked the largest advantage for either side. There were four lead changes and five ties.
A goal by Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) on a quick restart with just over four minutes to play in regulation gave Bucknell a 6-5 lead, but Johns Hopkins' Kyle Gertridge netted the tying goal on the fourth-seeded Blue Jays' next possession and then converted a five-meter penalty shot with 2:08 on the clock to make the score 7-6.
Bucknell senior co-captain Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) sent the game to overtime with his six-on-five score with 1:29 left in the fourth quarter. It was the lone goal of the game for Stupp.
The Bison broke the ice in overtime when Reamey scored the second of his two goals on a six-on-five attempt with six seconds remaining in the first of the two three-minute sessions.
Johns Hopkins (16-15), which leveled its record at 2-2 against Bucknell this year, evened the score when Gertridge converted another five-meter penalty shot after Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) was whistled for his third foul.
Freshman Ross Schofield netted the winning goal for Johns Hopkins with 1:27 remaining and Bucknell was unable to get another good look at the net the rest of the way.
Overall, Johns Hopkins tallied three of its nine goals on five-meter penalty shots, while Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) converted one for the Bison in the first quarter. Bucknell was 6-for-14 in six-on-five situations, while the Blue Jays were 2-for-8.
Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and Hyden each tallied four points (2g, 2a) to lead the Bison offense, while Reamey added an assist to go along with his two goals. Coghlan also drew a team-high six ejections, one shy of Hyden's team season high.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) played another strong game in goal for the Bison, stopping 13 shots. He now has nine double-figure save performances this season, including five in his last seven contests.
Bucknell played the final minutes without four veterans who had fouled out, including Spencer Richley (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor), Hyden, Kalter and Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep).
The Bison will next be in action Friday, Nov. 20, at the Eastern Championship. The three-day affair will run through Nov. 22 and features the top four teams from the Southern Championships and the top four squads from the Northern Championships.
