LEWISBURG, Pa. - Howie Kalter scored a team-high five goals and the No. 20 Bucknell men's water polo team tallied six unanswered goals through the first half of play to advance in the Southern Championships with an 11-6 victory over Mercyhurst Saturday morning in Kinney Natatorium. The Bison are now 21-12 in their opening game of the Southern Championships dating back to 2000.
Mercyhurst's Alex Moggridge made the first dent on the scoreboard, earning a goal with less than two minutes into play. Bucknell (15-11) then put to rest any hopes of a Lakers victory by claiming the game's next six goals. Katler scored twice during that run as did Richie Hyden. Hyden's second goal, which capped off the Bison run, came off a one-on-one with the Lakers' goalkeeper.
Moggridge did his best to keep the game close, recording three straight goals to bring Mercyhurst to within a pair of scores at 6-4. Moggridge finished the game with five of his team's six goals.
Bucknell put a stop to Mercyhurst's progress with three consecutive goals of its own. Again, it was Kalter with a pair of scores to get the ball rolling. Sean Coghlan chipped in the third, and Beau Caillouette added another with 26 seconds remaining in the third to give Bucknell a 10-5 advantage with just one quarter remaining.
Kalter netted his final goal of the morning early in the fourth period, bringing his season total to 49, and giving Bucknell the opportunity to play Princeton in its second match of the day. Princeton defeated Gannon 14-5 in its opening game of the championships.
Nick Donahue made seven saves in the contest, improving his season total to 173.
The Bison and the Tigers will meet at 4:30 p.m. today. The winner will advance to the championship game tomorrow.
