LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell wrestling team is coming off its best-ever finish at the EIWA Championships and is expected to continue its upward trend in 2009-10. The Bison tied Penn for third place at last year's conference championships and are predicted to finish alone in third this year, according to the EIWA Preseason Rankings, released this past weekend be the conference. Additionally, Bucknell had six individual wrestlers show up in the individual rankings.
The Bison, who for the first time since the reinstatement of the program have a senior class in 2009-10, will compete for the first time this year on Tuesday evening (Nov. 3) when they hold their annual intrasquad match. The match will take place inside Davis Gym at 7 p.m. and will feature competition at each weight class.
Bucknell, which had a program-record six NCAA qualifiers a year ago, is picked to finish behind only Cornell and Lehigh in the EIWA team standings. Navy, Penn and Rutgers are the squads listed immediately behind the Bison in the 14-team league.
Each of Bucknell's six NCAA qualifiers show up in the individual EIWA rankings, which list the top six wrestlers in each weight class. All-American Andy Rendos is listed first at 165 pounds, while Derek Reber (125) and Shane Riccio (174) are second in their weight classes. Three-time NCAA qualifier David Marble is third at 133 pounds, while Kevin LeValley (149) and David Thompson (184), who are both listed fourth, round out the list of ranked Bison.
Bucknell will open its 2009-10 season Sunday, Nov. 15, in Chapel Hill, N.C., against Virginia Tech, Virginia and host North Carolina. The Bison's first home event will be Nov. 27 when they host 22-time national champion Iowa and Rutgers in Sojka Pavilion. For tickets, call 570-577-1000 or visit www.bucknell.edu/boxoffice.
