Bucknell Women's Lacrosse is back in action for the 2009-10 season... and better than ever! On the field, we are already getting off to a hectic start, playing our first of three fall weekend play days this past weekend at St. Bonaventure. We started this year trying to get back into the swing of things in order to start where we left off with the great ending of last season - making the Patriot League Tournament. We got through our grueling run tests, and finally started practicing. Now that we have been able to integrate the new freshmen into our group both on and off the field, we are beginning to really feel like a family again (though we're missing our abroad teammates!), and it's starting to particularly show both in practice and games. Being a team off the field has helped with our integration as a team on the lacrosse field. Through team dinners, Grey's Anatomy Thursdays, and even the long car ride on Saturday, all of the returners have really gotten to know our newest teammates. I know how intimidating Division I lacrosse can be as a freshman, but our first-years are really stepping up to the challenge and feeling more and more comfortable every day.
Though we barely have enough healthy players to field a team at the moment, we have been really improving at working as whole units on the field, both on offense and defense. During each game of this past weekend, everyone could see drastic improvement in how we play together and use each other's strengths to the advantage of the entire team. Every drill in practice has been improving, and our stick skills are coming along nicely through wall ball and stick work during practice. I believe that this team will only continue improving over the next two weekends at UMBC and Navy, which will have some great competition for us.
The one thing that always makes me proud about this team is how we go through everything together, not as individuals. It's a striking difference from every team I have been a part of in the past. Every run test, every 100-yard sprint, every intense or gratifying moment on the field. We go through it with every single one of our teammates and help each other through the good and the bad. I feel that this attribute will help us continue to improve throughout the next few weeks of fall ball and into our regular season. I can already feel the excitement building around the immense talent that we have, and as our regular season comes closer, I hope everyone joins in on the anticipation that this team will continue to improve and make Bucknell history. GO BISON!
