LEWISBURG, Pa. - After enjoying back-to-back games on its home turf, Bucknell field hockey will return to the road to take on Lock Haven and Lehigh this week. The Bison (7-3, 1-0) will face the Eagles (9-3) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Charlotte E. Smith Field. They will then travel to Lehigh (4-5, 1-0) for an 11 a.m. matchup on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Live video for the game with Lehigh will be available at LehighSports.com.
ABOUT THE BISON
- In its last time out, Bucknell did not score a lot of goals, but it did make a big splash. The Bison shutout Lafayette 1-0 at Graham Field. The victory gave Bucknell its first 5-0 start at home in program history, its first league-opening victory since 2003 and its first back-to-back wins against the Leopards since the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
- Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) scored the lone goal in the contest to make all that history possible. The score came with 4:22 left in the first half and gave the junior midfielder her first goal of the season as well as her first career game winner.
- Raczek was recognized by the Patriot League for her heroics, earning the Offensive Player of the Week nod today. She was not the only Bison to pick up an award, however, as Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) was named Defensive Player of the Week.
- By holding Lafayette scoreless last Saturday, Atieh earned her first shutout of the season. Behind a strong defense, the senior needed to make just four saves to accomplish the feat.
- Bucknell will try to repeat a bit of history on Saturday when it travels to Lehigh. The last time the Bison won back-to-back league games was in 2005. The Bison won four straight, ending with a 5-1 win against Lafayette in Lewisburg and a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Lehigh. The streak began with wins over Colgate and Holy Cross, helping Bucknell to go 4-1 in the league that season.
- Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) might be glad the Bison are getting back on a bus this week. The senior forward leads all Bison in road games with nine points. She has reached that total by tallying four of her five goals and her assist away from Graham Field.
- Jeremy Cook continues to climb up the all-time coaching list at Bucknell. With a two-year record of 18-11, he is one win shy of tying Sally Starr for fifth place in all-time wins.
ABOUT THE EAGLES
- Lock Haven leads the Bison in the all-time series, 22-4-1. The last time these two teams met in 2008, Lock Haven came out on top with a 4-0 shutout. It has been nearly a decade since Bucknell came away with a win. The Bison pulled out a 2-1 victory in 2000.
- Lock Haven is 9-3 overall this year, most recently earning 4-0 wins over both West Chester and Quinnipiac. The Eagles have had some opponents in common with the Bison through the first half of the season. Contributing to its nine wins, Lock Haven defeated Vermont (3-0), La Salle (4-2) and Temple (4-1).
- The Eagles have five players with double-digit points in 2009. Amy Hordendorf leads the way with 24 points on 11 goals and two assists. Suzann Hobart (16 points), Mary Keister (13), Casey Hughes (11) and Kristi Shepps (11) also sit atop their list. Erin Terreson patrols the Eagles' net, earning three shutouts and registering 52 saves for a .765 save percentage. She has allowed 16 goals in the team's 12 games.
ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS
- Lehigh also leads Bucknell in the all-time series 21-13-1. The Bison won their last meeting, coming out on top 2-1 in 2008. The last time the Mountain Hawks dropped two straight to the Bison came in 2002 and 2003.
- Lehigh came out of the first weekend of Patriot League play with a 4-5 record overall and 1-0 in the league. The Mountain Hawks defeated Colgate 4-1 after beating Siena 3-2 last week. Lehigh's other wins this season came against Georgetown (3-2) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-1). Lehigh will face Villanova on Wednesday night prior to hosting the Bison.
- The Mountain Hawks are led offensively by Kimberly Eng, who with 21 points on eight goals and five assists, has a significant lead over her closes teammate. Lindsey Smith currently sits second on the team in points with seven. Defensively, Lilia Stefaniwsky and Jessica Miller have been splitting the starting duties evenly in goal. Stefaniwsky is stronger statistically having allowed seven goals compared to 17 for Miller. Stefaniwsky also has 42 saves on the season, while Miller has 15.
