LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the second consecutive week, Bucknell field hockey placed multiple players on the Patriot League's list of top student-athletes. Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Week, while Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) was recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) was the Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Atieh, who won the same award last week as well, made four saves against Lafayette last Saturday to get her first shutout of the season. Those four saves moved the senior co-captain into ninth place all-time at Bucknell with 191 career stops.
Atieh also improved her record to 7-3 on the season. The seven victories puts her in sole possession of sixth place in career wins at Bucknell with 22 and moves her to within one of joining the top 10 in single-season wins. Following the win over the Leopards, Atieh has a 2.24 goals against average and a .729 save percentage this year.
Raczek scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career to propel the Bison to the 1-0 win over Lafayette. Raczek's goal came unassisted with 4:22 to go in the first half. The score was also the first game-winning goal of her career. The junior midfielder then played an integral part throughout the remainder of the game to ensure Bucknell's first league-opening victory since 2003.
Raczek has five points on the season, adding three assists to her goal. As a sophomore last year, she was named Second Team All-Patriot League and took over the number one spot in Bucknell history for single-season assists with 16.
As the league's top defensive player this week, Weiss was key to leading the Bison to their first shutout of 2009. The defender helped allow only four shots to Lafayette all day, including just one in the first half. Weiss added to her impact on the field by firing off two shots herself, with one of them getting on goal.
Heading into the next week of play, Weiss is tied for third on the team this year with eight points on three goals and two assists. She has started every game at defender for the Bison in her junior year.
This is the third career weekly award for Atieh, the second for Raczek and the first for Weiss. The last time the Bison took three of the league's awards came for the week ending Sept. 24, 2007 when Atieh earned her first goalkeeping honor and former Bison Kelly Hoffman and Amanda Faust were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
The Bison are 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League this year. By shutting out Lafayette, they have earned a 5-0 record at home for the first time in program history. The team will be back on the field tomorrow to take on Lock Haven at 7 p.m. in Lock Haven, Pa.
