LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team opened its 2009-10 campaign Sunday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium in a non-scored meet against UMBC. The Bison claimed 13 individual victories in the meet, including six in freestyle events.
Four different Bison combined to win the six freestyle events, ranging in distance from 50 yards to 1,000 yards. Luke Trafton (500, 1,000) and Eric Sokolosky (50, 100) each picked up two victories, while Matthew Segar (200) and Christian Treat (200) each won once as the 200 was held twice during the meet. Bucknell swept the first three positions in both 200 free races as well as the 100 free. Trafton, Segar, Sokolosky and Treat combined for 11 top-two finishes Sunday.
The Bison also had success in the individual medley with Daniel Fletcher winning both the 200-yard IM (1:56.21), one spot ahead of Jonathan Podniesinski, and the 100 IM. Podniesinski posted a first-place showing of his own in the 400 IM, finishing just ahead of freshman teammate Billy Krause.
Taylor Harris (50 fly) and Nathaniel Frye (50 breast) rounded out the list of Bison swimmers who posted victories Sunday.
The lone diver on the Bucknell roster, freshman Dave Magaro, had a solid college debut, easily winning off both the one-meter board (229.87) and the three-meter (235.50). He was more than 20 points ahead of his closest competitor in both events.
The meet featured a number of shorter-distance events and served as a tuneup for the rest of the season. The Bison will next be in action in just under three weeks (Oct. 24) when they take on George Mason at 1 p.m. inside Kinney Natatorium.
