LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell took control of the Patriot League women's soccer race with two road victories last week, and stellar defensive efforts played a major role in both wins. At the center of the strong defensive wall was junior co-captain Amanda Citron (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), who was rewarded with Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Bucknell began the week last Thursday with a 1-0 win at Army. In that game the Bison allowed only six total shots, including only three that were on goal. Citron and the Bison defense did not let Army put a shot on frame in the entire second half, ensuring that Kelliann Doherty's 58th-minute goal would hold up. It was Bucknell's fifth shutout of the season.
It was more of the same in Sunday's 3-1 win at Holy Cross. Although Bucknell ceded a goal early in the game, the Bison only permitted the Crusaders to launch eight total shots, only three of which were on target.
Citron, Bucknell's defensive MVP last season and a member of the 2008 Patriot League All-Tournament Team, earned defensive player of the week honors for the first time.
Bucknell has now won five straight matches, all in Patriot League play, outscoring their opponents 12-3 over that span. The Bison now have sole possession of first place in the standings with only one regular-season match remaining. They can claim the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament with a win or a tie at Colgate on Saturday.
Bucknell is 10-6-1 overall and has now reached double digits in the win column for the fifth straight year.
