LEWISBURG, Pa. - Both goal-scorers in the Bucknell men's soccer team's dramatic come-from-behind win over Colgate were honored on Monday. Freshman Josh Plump (Millburn, N.J./Millburn), who tied the game at 1-all in the 81st minute, earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors, while sophomore Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's), who scored the game-winner with just 1:52 remaining, was picked as the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week.
The 2-1 victory over Colgate brought the Bison within one point of first-place American in the Patriot League standings, and Bucknell is also a point away from clinching one of the four spots in the Patriot League Tournament.
In Saturday's game in Hamilton, N.Y., Colgate took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute, and it appeared the Raiders would make the lead hold up before Bucknell amped up the pressure late in regulation. After Powell made a big defensive play to clear a ball off the Bison goal line, Bucknell countered with the tying goal. Sean King headed the ball to Conor O'Brien, who headed it to Plump, who fired home a high shot from the middle of the penalty area.
Plump, who came into the game with three assists on the season, picked up his first career goal. He is the third Bucknell player to win Patriot League honors in the last two weeks. A week ago, CK Kumah was the PL Rookie of the Week and classmate Brendan Burgdorf was the Offensive Player of the Week.
The Bison were not finished after Plump struck for the equalizer. In the 89th minute, Powell intercepted a clearing pass from a Colgate defender near the left sideline, dribbled toward the center of the field and sent a precise 25-yard shot into the far side netting.
It was Powell's second goal of the season and his career, and both have been game-winners in the 85th minute or later. Back on Sept. 23 in Lewisburg, Powell scored with 5:59 remaining in regulation to five the Bison a 1-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.).
Bucknell is now 12-4 on the season and one win shy of the program record (the 2002 team won 13 matches).
The Bison have a non-conference road game at NJIT on Tuesday evening, then they finish up the regular season at home against Patriot League rivals Lafayette and Lehigh. The Lafayette game on Friday will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel at 8 p.m.
