LEWISBURG, Pa. - It is the beginning of October, but the Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving season kicks off Sunday as both Bison squads host UMBC at 1 p.m. inside Kinney Natatorium. The meet marks the third consecutive year Bucknell has faced the Retrievers the first weekend of October.
Like the previous two early-season competitions between Bucknell and UMBC, Sunday's meet will be an un-scored affair.
The Bison men are coming off a season in which they posted a 7-2 record and finished second at the Patriot League Championships. They had nine All-Patriot League selections, and eight of those honorees return this year, including seniors Luke Trafton and Daniel Fletcher. Trafton is a co-captain this year along with classmate Ben Bible.
On the women's side, Bucknell accumulated a solid 7-3 mark and took third at the Patriot League Championships. The Bison had eight All-Patriot League choices a year ago and all eight will be back in Orange & Blue this season. Five current seniors (Abigail Atkinson, Rebecca Bersani, Megan Mongan, Lauren Russell and Courtney Warren) were among those honored by the Patriot League last winter. Atkinson and Warren, as well as diver Allison FitzPatrick, are captains this year.
Bucknell will be idle for nearly three weeks following Sunday's meet. The Bison will next be in action on Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 24) when they face George Mason. Bucknell will be home three times in October and will have five home competitions overall.
