Bucknell Softball's Finkel Recaps Fall Season, Looks Toward Spring

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball student-athletes will be checking in throughout the season as the team begins its drive for a Patriot League Championship. Here is the first installment of the student-athletes' journals leading up to the 2010 season from senior utility player and environmental studies major, Sherry Finkel.

"One! We are the Bison…Two! A little bit louder…Three! I still can't hear you…Four, more, more, more…” Bucknell West Mod residents are certainly familiar with this chant as a wake-up call. The Bucknell Softball team has awakened sleeping Modsters for years with weekend game cheering. This fall season, our cheers were a little louder than ever before. Our team has made huge strides and is ecstatic for the coming spring season.
Our fall season showing was strong with five wins and only one loss to Penn State. Our pitching staff has been a main key to our success despite its youth. The two freshman and two sophomore pitchers led us to victory by minimizing walks and strong hits. Most importantly though, our young pitchers showed poise and experience beyond their years—they were able to give their fielders as much support as the fielders gave them.
We are lucky to have a talented recruiting class, a strong sophomore and junior core, and the first group of seniors to have all stayed with the program. However, some of our toughest competition came during the alumni game. Our opposition came ready to play, donning monochromatic black uniforms and even eye black to strike fear into our undergraduate hearts. Their effort was legitimate if not admirable, but we still managed to win the war.
Our successful fall experiences aside, we all know the challenges that lie ahead. During our team retreat to Cowan, the players and coaches drafted a commitment letter designed to focus our attention on becoming Patriot League Champs. The winter can put a damper, literally and metaphorically, on softball. We understand that in order to survive the dreary winter months, we must remember our desire to win.
