LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bison field hockey will be joining the list of Bucknell teams in the fight against breast cancer this weekend, co-sponsoring a Play 4 the Cure event on Saturday. The Bison will be providing pink ribbons to fans in exchange for donations as they take on American at Graham Field at 10 a.m. All contributions will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Ribbons will also be available at the women's soccer game against Navy at 1 p.m. the same day.
In addition to helping raise money for breast cancer research, the Bison will sport pink socks during the contest to help increase awareness and demonstrate support for those battling the disease. Bucknell first-year assistant coach Jamie Whitten, who is heading the Bison's efforts through her connection with the Play 4 the Cure founder, is eager to start a team tradition of being active within the community.
"I am really excited about the prospect of getting our players and parents involved and hopefully starting a tradition of giving within the Bison field hockey program," said Whitten.
Bucknell field hockey and women's soccer are not the only squads taking part in the fight against breast cancer. The Bison volleyball team will also host a Think Pink Night when it takes on Lafayette at 7 p.m. on Friday in Davis Gym. Pink t-shirts, sponsored by Evangelical Community Hospital's Women's Resource Center, will be tossed into the stands during the match. Donations collected by the team prior to the match will be given to the Women's Resource Center.
Play 4 the Cure was started in 2006 by Tina Reinprecht, founder, director and head coach of the Mystx Field Hockey Club in honor of the mothers of the team's players who had fought breast cancer. Initially an indoor field hockey benefit tournament, Play 4 the Cure has since expanded to include high school, college and club teams with more than $11,000 being donated to the Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. For more information, visit the organization's website at www.play4thecure.com.
The Bison field hockey-women's soccer doubleheader kicks off at Graham Field at 10 a.m. Fans can then head over to the soccer side of Holmes Stadium as Bucknell takes on Navy at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on Bison Vision with live stats available on GameTracker at BucknellBison.com.
