NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) registered team highs with five goals and five assists on Sunday as the No. 17 Bucknell men's water polo team split a pair of games against Redlands and No. 13 Pacific at the UC Irvine Invitational. The Bison won their opener 13-6 over the Bulldogs, but fell 10-7 to the nationally ranked Tigers later in the afternoon.
Bucknell (12-9) concluded play at the UC Irvine Invitational with a 1-3 record, but faced three top-13 teams in just over 24 hours. The Bison are now 3-9 against ranked opponents and are a sparkling 12-0 opposite unranked foes. The loss to Pacific came in the 13th-place game, meaning Bucknell took 14th in the 16-team field.
The first half was the difference in both games. Against Redlands, Bucknell jumped out to a 7-1 halftime lead and coasted to the seven-goal victory. Pacific turned the tables in the second game, taking a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. The Bison cut their halftime deficit to 6-4, but were unable to draw closer.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) had a solid day in goal for the Bison, tallying 17 saves in 48 minutes of play. Eleven of those stops came against Pacific. Donahue yielded just 11 goals during his time in cage.
Reamey, who had 12 goals and seven assists this season entering Sunday's competition, had a breakout day. He tallied three goals and three assists against the Bulldogs, matching the most points by a Bison player this season. He followed with two goals and two more assists for a team-high four points against Pacific.
Freshman Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) equaled Reamey for the team lead in goals against Redlands. Barron also won 6 of 8 sprints on the day to go along with three steals and an ejection drawn.
The Bison posted a convincing win over Redlands despite giving the Bulldogs 15 six-on-five opportunities.
