BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Marquis Hall hit a shot in the lane with one second remaining in the game to give Lehigh a come-from-behind 61-59 victory over Bucknell Wednesday night at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks rallied from 10 down in the second half to stun the Bison and keep them winless on the road this season.
Justin Castleberry and Patrick Behan scored 18 points each for the Bison (5-15, 2-4), while Bryan Cohen had 10 points and Darryl Shazier added five points and seven assists.
Hall tallied 16 points for Lehigh (13-7, 3-3), while Zahir Carrington had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Bucknell got off to a great start in this one, taking a nine-point halftime lead and stretching it to 10 early in the second half. But the Bison hit a cold spell, managing only a pair of free throws over a seven-minute span, and Lehigh climbed back in it.
Rob Keefer's 3-pointer highlighted a 12-4 run that brought the Mountain Hawks within 42-40 and it was tight the rest of the way. With 8:25 left Behan converted a 3-point play to give Bucknell a 47-42 lead. Hall hit a 3-pointer with 7:26 to play to make it a 49-47 game, and neither team led by more than one possession the rest of the night.
Lehigh took its first lead since 11-10 on Carrington's tie-breaking free throws with 2:13 left, but Castleberry answered with a 3-pointer to put Bucknell up 56-55 with 1:55 left. At the other end Keefer was fouled shooting an elbow jumper and made both free throws with 1:36 left.
Shazier missed a shot in the lane inside a minute to play, and Bucknell got a defensive stop but Castleberry was called for traveling after coming down with the rebound a bit off balance. Hall hit two free throws with 27 seconds left after being fouled on the inbounds, putting Lehigh up 59-56.
Shazier then penetrated and kicked back out to Cohen, who swished a tying 3-pointer with 19 seconds left. But Lehigh called timeout and called Hall's number. The point guard drove into traffic and flipped up a hanging shot that hit the rim twice before dropping in with one second to play.
Bucknell tried a long pass on the inbounds but it was broken up.
Bucknell shot 57.1 percent (12-21) from the floor in the first half and went to the locker room at halftime with the lead for the first time this season on the road. The Bison held Lehigh scoreless for the final 4:48 of the half, outscoring the Mountain Hawks 9-0 over that span.
Hall's 3-pointer tied the game at 21-all, but Behan converted a layup, Shazier hit a 3-pointer, Castleberry rimmed in a short leaner and Behan scored inside again to put the Bison up 30-21 at the half.
Bucknell made 5 of 10 3-pointers, two by Boon, in the half. Defensively the Bison held Lehigh to 9-for-29 (.310) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Bucknell finished at 46.8 percent on the night and hit 9 of 19 from 3-point range. Lehigh shot 39.0 percent and was just 4-for-17 from three.
The Mountain Hawks were whistled for only eight fouls all night, and even though Bucknell missed only one free throw in the game, Lehigh outscored the Bison 11-6 from the foul line.
Bucknell is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Army for a 4 p.m. contest at Christl Arena.
