ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) registered her third consecutive three-goal game, but the Bucknell women's water polo team was unable to upset No. 8 Arizona State on Sunday as it lost to the Sun Devils 15-7 to complete its Michigan Kick-Off slate. The Bison finished the weekend 1-3, but were forced to play three top-10 teams in a span of less than 30 hours.
Rozas had a solid all-around game, dishing out one assist, registering one steal and drawing two ejections to go along with her team-high three goals. However, Arizona State scored 10 first-half goals, including six in the first quarter, to build a solid 10-5 halftime lead as it improved to 3-0 on the weekend.
Senior captain Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) chipped in with two goals and one assist, while Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover), who exploded for a career-high seven goals early in the day against Colorado State, registered one goal and one assist.
Junior Rachel McGillis (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) split time in goal with freshman Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) and they combined to make 15 saves. McGillis played the first half and had eight stops against 10 goals allowed, while Connell registered seven saves and yielded five goals in her second career appearance. Both goalies also contributed one steal to Bucknell's defensive effort.
With its challenging opening weekend behind it, Bucknell will now play just three games over the next month. The Bison are next in action at the Princeton Open on Feb. 7 where they will play Villanova and Mercyhurst.
