LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell junior quarterback Marcello Trigg (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) was named the Patriot League Football Offensive Player of the Week on Monday and later added the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week award to his trophy case. The veteran completed 14 of 16 passes for 290 yards and a pair of touchdowns as he led the Bison to a wild 48-42 victory over Duquesne in the season opener at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium this past Saturday.
Trigg completed his first 14 passes and reached the 290-yard mark late in the third quarter with Bucknell comfortably leading 48-14. He attempted two passes the rest of the way, but still totaled more passing yards than any Bison since Jim Fox threw for 291 yards in a 1995 loss to Lehigh.
Thanks to the offensive explosion that featured 42 first-half points, Trigg ranks among the national leaders in a number of categories. He tops the country in passing efficiency (281.00) and is second in total offense (309.0 yards per game). His two rushing touchdowns place him in a tie for eighth nationally in scoring.
Trigg's 290 yards passing helped vault him over the 2,000-yard mark for his career. He now has 2,037 yards in his three-year career.
Trigg was Bucknell's first Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week since Dante Ross earned the honor in October of 2005.
Bucknell will take to the road for the first time this season when it travels to Moon Township, Pa., Saturday for a 1 p.m. meeting with Robert Morris. Trigg will be trying to lead the Bison to a third consecutive win for the first time since late in the 2004 season.
