ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Richie Hyden (Melboure, Australia/Greenwich) posted a five-goal game for the second consecutive day and Bucknell scored a total of 30 goals to defeat Queens and Iona Sunday on the final day of the Navy Open. The Bison defeated Queens 15-2 in the morning and followed with a 15-9 victory over Iona to stretch their winning streak to three games.
Bucknell (3-1), which scored 16 goals against Fordham on Saturday evening, has 46 goals in its last three games. That is the most points in a three-game stretch for the Bison since they netted 47 against MIT (14), Johns Hopkins (14) and Gannon (19) early in the 2006 campaign.
Hyden, who has tallied four multiple-goal outings on the young season, registered eight goals on Sunday. He had three in the opener with Queens and then matched his career and season high with five goals opposite Iona. The sophomore leads the team with 15 goals and 22 points. He had 40 goals and 71 points in nearly 30 games last year when he was named the CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Year.
Bucknell first-year head coach John Abdou was able to play the entire Bison lineup in both games and it showed as 10 players found the back of the net against Queens. Freshman Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) tied Hyden for game-high honors with three goals, while senior co-captain Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach) added a pair.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), who played the first half of all four games this past weekend in goal, led the team with three assists. He also had three saves in the opener, during which Queens managed just one goal in each half. In fact, the Bison jumped out to an 8-1 halftime lead and finished the game with 18 steals and 14 ejections drawn.
Bucknell again used a big first half to defeat Iona. The Bison led 10-2 at halftime before the Gaels outscored them 7-5 in the second half.
Hyden again led the way against Iona with his five goals and two assists. Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) added a career-high three goals, while Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) chipped in two apiece.
Bucknell managed just seven steals against Iona, with Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) leading the way with three. However, Donahue carried the defense, equaling his career high of nine saves while playing just the first half. Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) replaced him and made five saves in the second half, giving him eight on the day.
For the fourth consecutive game, every player on the Bucknell roster who was available appeared in the game. Seven players had at least one goal, while eight registered at least one assist.
Bucknell has now opened its season with a record of at least 3-1 for the third consecutive season. Each time the loss has come to California, which is the two-time defending national champion and No. 1 team in the nation.
The Bison will return to action next weekend at the Princeton Invitational. They will face No. 3 Stanford, No. 15 Santa Clara, No. 18 George Washington and Iona over the course of the two-day event.
