PRINCETON, N.J. – Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Aventura) came off the bench to tally a career-high five goals and the Bucknell men's water polo team staved off an Iona comeback as the Bison defeated the Gaels 13-11 in overtime Saturday evening at the Princeton Invitational. Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) added three goals and two assists for Bucknell, which led by as many as five goals in the first half.
It appeared as though the Bison, who easily defeated Iona by six goals last weekend, would cruise to their fourth victory of the season as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led by as much as 6-1 in the first half. However, the Gaels outscored Bucknell in each of the final three quarters to force overtime.
The Bison got back on track, scoring one goal in each of the two three-minute overtime periods to preserve the victory.
Heiber led the team with his five goals and added one assist for a career-high six points. Hyden dished out two assists, giving him five points in the game. He now has 35 points in just six games this season. Only six Bison had more points all of last season.
Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) chipped in two goals before leaving the game with an injury in the third quarter, while Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) recorded a career-high four assists to pace the squad.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) played all 38 minutes in goal and made eight saves. It was the first time in the season's first six games that Donahue and Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) did not split time in cage.
Bucknell (4-2), which is ranked 18th nationally and has reached double figures in goals in each of its four wins, had plenty of offensive opportunities against Iona as it drew 13 ejections. Hyden led the way with four, while Lampley and Heiber each drew three from the center forward position.
Earlier in the day the Bison dropped a tough 10-8 decision to George Washington.
Bucknell will face a pair of top-20 teams on Sunday as it concludes play at the Princeton Invitational. The Bison will take on No. 3 Stanford at 10:20 a.m. and less than five hours later will battle No. 15 Santa Clara.
