LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team is set to venture to Owings Mills, Md., this weekend to take on Ball State and Towson on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, respectively. The Bison enter the weekend with a 1-1 record, and are coming off a 4-1 win over Longwood on Sunday, Aug. 31.
Both of this weekend's contests for the Orange and Blue are being played at Stevenson University, with Saturday's match against the Cardinals slated for a 10 a.m. start time. Ball State comes into play with a 1-2 record, falling to Richmond 8-3 and defeating Davidson 2-0 last weekend at the Miami Kick-Off Classic. Ball State lost 7-0 to Towson in a game played Friday afternoon. Brittany Hammer leads the Cardinals with three goals this season, while Jodi Mann has two. This will be the first ever game between Bucknell and Ball State.
Bucknell's Sunday game versus Towson is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. Towson will come into the game with a 2-0 record. In addition to defeating Ball State, Towson shut out Robert Morris 2-0 on Friday, Aug. 29. Goalkeeper Whitney Clugston did not face a shot in the game against Robert Morris and turned aside the two shots on goal registered by the Cardinals. The Tigers have yet to allow a goal in 140 minutes of action this season. Junior forward Christina Boarman scored four goals against Ball State, taking nine shots, eight of which were on goal. Last year, she set a single-season Tigers record with 38 points, a total that led the Colonial Athletic Association. Her first career goal came against the Bison in 2006, a game which the Tigers won, 2-1.
Also in the Tigers' win over the Cardinals, Stephanie Kisic added two assists, giving her three for the season and tying her for the team lead with Laura Schnell, who also had two helpers against the Cardinals. Kristie Blumer has added two goals this season for the Tigers.
This is the 26th career meeting between Towson and Bucknell, with the Orange and Blue holding a 16-9 advantage. The Bison won last year's game 4-3 at Graham Field. Bison goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, Pa./West Essex) made nine saves in the win, and Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), Jacquie Kataneksza (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) and Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) all scored goals. Krebs's tally came with less than two minutes to go in the game, breaking a 3-3 tie.
