LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior co-captain Mark Schmiegel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) earned two weekly awards on Monday after playing a starring role in the Bucknell men's soccer team's Patriot League victory over Navy on Saturday night. Schmiegel, who scored both Bison goals in a 2-1 overtime victory, was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week. Also, freshman midfielder Luke Joyner (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
Playing in front of a Holmes Stadium-record crowd of 1,202, Bucknell quickly fell behind Navy 1-0 before rallying in the Patriot League opener for both teams. Schmiegel's goal in the 38th minute evened the contest. Despite a 16-4 shot advantage in the second half, the Bison could not pull ahead, but 7:36 into sudden-death overtime Schmiegel scored again to give Bucknell a 2-1 victory.
Schmiegel, who now has four goals on the season, registered his first career multi-goal game. It was his first overtime score since the 2006 NCAA Tournament, when his golden goal gave the Bison a 1-0 first-round win over George Mason.
Joyner logged his first career assist on Bucknell's first goal of the night, trapping a crossing pass with his chest in traffic in front of the goal and tapping it over to Schmiegel for the score. Joyner, who scored the game-tying goal late in a 2-2 draw with Hartwick earlier this season, has seen the most time of any Bucknell freshman field player this season.
The Bison are now 4-4-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the Patriot League. They travel to La Salle on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., then return to Patriot League play on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Holy Cross.
