WASHINGTON, D.C. – Playing its second game of the day, the Bucknell men's water polo team lost to George Washington by an 11-9 margin Saturday night. Earlier in the day, the Bison lost a heartbreaking 7-6 outing to No. 14 Navy.
Playing in an unfamiliar shallow-deep pool, Bucknell (8-7, 1-2 CWPA Southern Division) led 7-6 at halftime, but was outscored 5-2 in the second half. Leading scorer Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) failed to net a goal for just the third time this season, but he did dish out a team-high three assists to take over the team lead from Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) with 25. Stupp, who posted one assist against George Washington, now has 24.
Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)) and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) picked up the scoring slack from Hyden with two goals apiece. Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) tied Hyden for team-high honors with three points (1g, 2a).
Bucknell, which has scored on nearly half of its shots this season, converted just nine of its 34 attempts against the Colonials.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) earned his fifth start of the season in goal and made three saves while allowing seven goals. Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), the 6'7” junior, played the second and fourth quarters, which were the two frames the Bison were defending the shallow end. He recorded a pair of saves and yielded four goals.
George Washington, which snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in league play, was led by six goals from John-Claude Wright.
After playing four consecutive weekends, Bucknell will be idle next weekend. The Bison will next be in action Oct. 11-12 at the SoCal Tournament. Final schedules for the two-day event have not been released yet.
