LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In its first day of competition at the difficult SoCal Tournament that features the top 11 teams in the nation, the Bucknell men's water polo team faced a pair of top-10 squads and lost both games. The Bison dropped their opener to No. 3 UCLA 13-6 and then fell by a 7-3 score to No. 10 Long Beach State in the nightcap. Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Hillsborough) and Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)) each posted two-goal games on the day, while Heiber's three total scores led Bucknell.
Bucknell (8-9), which has now faced four top-10 teams this season, was in both games early as it was tied with the Bruins 2-2 after the first quarter and trailed just 2-1 to the 49ers at halftime. The Bison had lost their previous two games against top-10 teams (No. 1 Cal, No. 3 Stanford) by a combined 25 goals.
Hyden and Ang each had two goals in the opener against UCLA, while Heiber and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.C./Phillips Academy Andover) each added one. The Bruins outscored the Bison 8-3 after halftime.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) and Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) once again split time in goal, with Donahue starting. Donahue recorded five saves and two steals while yielding five goals. In the second half, Gilhuly allowed eight goals while making three saves.
Donahue played the entire game against Long Beach State, but the 49ers used a five-goal second half to post the four-goal victory. Donahue did manage eight saves and one steal in the contest.
Heiber, who now has a career-high 25 goals on the season, reached the 100-point plateau in his career with two of Bucknell's three goals against Long Beach State. Fellow co-captain Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added the other score, while Ang posted a pair of assists.
Bucknell will play two more games on Sunday as it wraps up play at the SoCal Tournament. The Bison, who have faced nine ranked opponents this season, are guaranteed of going up against at least one more ranked foe on Sunday. They will face the loser of Saturday night's game between No. 15 Princeton and No. 11 Pacific Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern. That game will take place at Loyola Marymount's Burns Aquatic Center, the same pool the Bison played in on Saturday.
